1952 MG TD Replica V8 Hot Rod
Inside The Build
The Owner's Story
A one of a kind 1952 MG TD replica, built as a fully custom hot rod, with only 1,268 miles showing, and it looks it. It's titled as a 1952 MG, so no emissions testing is needed in Florida or most other states. Bob puts the cost to build it at around $65,000.
Open the hood and that's the best part: a big, all chromed out Chevy 350 (5.7 liter) V8 show engine with a chrome air cleaner, backed by a 350 Turbo automatic. Diamond plate runs through the engine bay, between the dual exhausts and along the undersides, there are adjustable coil over shocks on all four wheels, and everything under the car is spotless, so it's ready to show. Hood louvers and an electric fan keep it cool, and it's very peppy.
The fiberglass body wears a very pricey Ebony black paint job with hand painted red pinstripes. Inside you get red leather, a Lecarra wood steering wheel on a tilt column with a chrome steering column, six white faced classic gauges, and mahogany on the dash, glove box and door trim. The seat back tilts forward to a storage area, and a JVC AM/FM Bluetooth stereo hides under the seat. The lift up rear trunk is polished mahogany on top and sides and holds the spare, and the custom painted gas tank and the battery live in the trunk too. Eight chrome side supercharger pipes (for show only), custom chrome headlights, dual spotlights and twin trumpet horns finish it off. It has a German canvas folding top with a crystal clear rear window, but no side curtains.
Clean Florida title in Bob Simpson's name. Listed at $18,000 cash, firm, down from $29,900 and a fraction of what it cost to build. He can arrange enclosed, insured shipping to your door.
The History
The MG TD arrived in 1950 as the successor to the TC, the little roadster American servicemen brought home from Britain after the war, which helped kick off America's love affair with sports cars. MG built the TD at its Abingdon works from 1950 to 1953 and made it more modern and more comfortable, with independent front suspension, rack and pinion steering and smaller wheels, while keeping the upright grille, sweeping fenders and cut down doors that made the T series famous. Power came from a 1,250 cc four cylinder. Nearly 30,000 TDs were built, and most of them were shipped to the United States, where they became fixtures at early road races and club runs. That classic shape has made the TD a favorite of replica builders for decades. This one takes the idea further than most: the TD's looks over a fully chromed Chevy 350 V8, a 350 Turbo automatic and coil over suspension, built to be shown and driven.
